W Sydney, opening in Darling Harbour in October 2023, is now casting for a Learning & Development Manager to lead day-to-day operation of the L&D department. Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, this integral role provides L&D leadership to the business and presents an amazing opportunity to play a key role in the pre-opening efforts of the world’s largest W Hotel.

The L&D Manager’s primary responsibilities include driving company values and philosophy and ensures all learning and development activities are strategically linked to the organization’s mission and vision.  Works with property leadership team to identify and address talent and organizational development needs.  The position is responsible for ensuring effective learning is in place to enable the achievement of desired business results.  Learning programs focus on a variety of topics, including product knowledge, company philosophy, and customer service and leadership skills.  Conducts needs assessments, designs and develops learning programs and facilitates the delivery of both custom and corporate learning programs.  Measures the effectiveness of learning to ensure a return on investment.

TALENT PROFILE

Education & Experience Required

  • 2-year degree from an accredited university in Human Resources, Hotel and Restaurant Management, Hospitality, Business Administration, or related major; certified trainer.
  • Minimum two-year experience as L&D Manager or Assistant L&D Manager in a busy, luxury hotel/hospitality environment
  • Pre-opening experience will be an advantage
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication and Microsoft Office skills, and a strong attention to detail

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Administering Talent Learning Programs

  • Promotes and informs talent about all learning programs.
  • Displays leadership in guest hospitality, exemplifies excellent customer service and creates a positive atmosphere for guest relations.
  • Helps talent identify specific behaviors that will contribute to service excellence.
  • Ensures talent receive on-going learning to understand guest expectations.
  • Uses effective learning methods to ensure talent have a good understanding of guest satisfaction and can demonstrate guest satisfaction skills.
  • Meets with learning cadre on a regular basis to support learning efforts.
  • Observes service behaviors of talent and provides feedback to individuals and/or managers.

Evaluating Learning Programs Effectiveness

  • Monitors enrollment and attendance at learning classes.
  • Meets regularly with participants to assess progress and address concerns.
  • Partners with operational leaders to assess if talent demonstrate effective technical and leadership skills.
  • Reviews comment cards, guest satisfaction results and other data to identify areas of improvement.
  • Measures transfer of learning from learning courses to the operation.
  • Ensures adult learning principles are incorporated into Learning programs.

Developing Learning Program Plans and Budgets

  • Ensures all learning and development activities (department specific and general property learning) are strategically linked to the organization’s mission and vision.
  • Identifies performance gaps and works with managers to develop and implement appropriate learning to improve performance.
  • Makes any necessary adjustments to learning methodology and/or re-trains as appropriate.
  • Aligns current learning and development programs to effectively impact key business indicators.
  • Establishes guidelines so talent understand expectations and parameters.
  • Develops specific learning to improve service performance.
  • Drives brand values and philosophy in all learning and development activities.
  • Incorporates guest satisfaction as a component of departmental meetings with a focus on continuous improvement.

Managing Learning Budgets

  • Participates in the development of the learning budget as required.
  • Manages budget in alignment with Human Resources and property financial goals.
  • Manages department controllable expenses to achieve or exceed budgeted goals.
